Attn NYC readers: my loss is your gain!

A few years ago a patisserie came to the City of Oaks. Hereghty Heavenly Delishous was just that, heaven. It was a little bit of Paris tucked into a tiny but beautiful space. I was deeply saddened about a month ago to see the lights off and doors locked. I thought it was just another victim of the recession.

Fast forward to yesterday. The badger had a bunch of airline miles about to expire and we could cash them in for magazine subscriptions. I picked a few, including New York Magazine. I flipped through the glossy pages to have my eye caught by a photo of a baguette. Being a "carbo kid" since birth, I read on.

"Baguettes and croissants are par for the course at a French bakery, but Payard Patisserie & Bistro isn't the first place you'd expect to find a sturdy caraway rye and a fennel-see-crusted twelve-grain cibatta. For those tasty loaves, we thank Christopher Hereghty, a Payard veteran newly recruited to expand the bread program after a sojourn in North Carolina, where he opened his own bakery."
So New Yorkers, savor our loss at Payard (1032 Lexington Ave, nr. 73rd street). (If you're really lucky Hereghty will drop a few of his fabulous desserts around too ... especially the "chocolate chewies!")

SOOOO sad! Thanks for solving that mystery - I couldn't figure out why in the world they closed! Raleigh is in need of a great bakery place.

As of Dec 08 until they closed, I was one of the chefs at Hereghtys. I am the one who made the cookies..and yes the chocolate chewies. We didn't even know the place was going to close and neither did the other owner. My friend at the time and I were just thrown into the place and had to start from scratch. I do hope everyone noticed a postitive change for the short time we were there because we didn't have much to go on. I did read on one website they have or are going to reopen for lunches. I didn't make the sandwiches but you can thank Wal-Mart for the wonderful sandwich bread and crossiants in the morning. Even after not being paid for any of my time working there, I do wish them the best of luck in the future if they open back up.
