Tea Time.

I've been re-evaluating and re-grouping the past few weeks. Having a doctor say you have hypertension at 25 will do that to you. We can't exactly trigger why this is happening to me at this particular time, but I am trying to make some lifestyle changes to combat the issue without going on drugs. The Doc asked me all the typical questions: Do you smoke? {heck no} -- Do you drink alcohol? {yes, but i would put myself into the occasional category} -- Do you exercise? {I have a furry exercise machine that requires at least 3 miles a day} -- Are you a heavy salt eater? {Not really, but I know its hidden in lots of food} -- Are you a heavy caffeine drinker? {Nope. I have approx 1/2 a cup of green tea a morning and maybe a coke every other day. My waterbottle is my friend.} --Are you under extra stress? {ding ding ding. unemployed, economy is in the toilet, they are re-plumbing my entire condo, etc.etc.}

This made me think and be amazed yet again by God's "plan" for each and every one of us. Perhaps by loosing my job it allowed me the time to go catch up on doctors visits and discover a potential serious problem before it became serious. Having more time for myself allows me to focus on the good and (try) to relax more and reduce stress & anxiety (as much as possible while job-hunting!)

One of the "eastern" methods I am trying is herbs. On a suggestion from a good friend, yesterday I went to a local "hippy" store and was lead towards Tulsi Tea.

Tulsi Tea, also known as "Holy Basil" is known across India as "The Queen of Herbs" and has been known as a sacred healing plant for 5,000 years. It has natural immune system benefits while also relieving the body's negative reaction to stress. So far so good. Tastes pretty delish to me.

I've also been having a hard time falling asleep at night. I tend to have all sorts of thoughts running through my head which gets me keyed up and then I can't catch those ZZZ's. The herbalist suggested that I try Peter Gillham's Natural Calm. Its a magnesium supplement. Apparently magnesium deficiency can lead to sleeplessness and anxiety. I tried it for the first time last night and slept like a baby!

Next step: finding a yoga studio. (Any triangle area suggestions are welcomed!)

Perhaps my lifestyle changes will help you identify issues in your own life and make some changes for yourself!

1) I take yoga (when I take it) from Gateway Yoga (off of Oberlin). I'll be going sporadically on Wednesday evenings if you'd like to join!

2) I'm thinking about you, and you know I'm here if you need anything...

Did you go to the little place connected to/next to Whole Foods on Wade? Love it. Also, Valerian root was suggested to me by a friend for the sleeplessness induced by stress and it's not bad, either!

One of my sorority sisters owns Centered in N. Raleigh - it's pricey but SOOOOO much fun. I'd check it out once a month or so!

I'm so sorry about your job situation and all the stress...I completely understand - I'm currently unemployed myself, and it's crazy trying to find that "perfect" job in this economy! If you want any company during the day let me know.:) My time off has definitely reminded me to appreciate the good things and that things happen for a reason. The one thing that's kept me going is exercising and keeping myself busy. For yoga, off the top of my head I think of Gold's Gym and Gateway Yoga on Oberlin...I've also seen people with yoga mats coming out of that earthy type bookstore on Wake Forest Rd right next to Capital Creations (yummy wheat crust pizza, in case you haven't tried it), but the place seems a little too new age for me!

You're in my thoughts! I hope that these things help you, I agree praying works too. And meditating - I always thought it was kind of silly but it really works!

Good luck, let us know how you are doing!

Yoga has helped me recently! That & just reserving me time to do whatever I NEED...reading, watching my fave shows, or nothing at all!

Two years ago I ran into the same situation. My dr tried to put me on meds right away and I resisted - I was only 26! I added regular yoga practice into my life once again and learned to control my breath. Now, I practice controlling my breath three times a day - when I first get up, around lunch time, and when I'm going to sleep. Just forcing myself to take deep breaths and then making my inhales, exhales, and pauses inbetween of equal length was a great help. I'm not entirely out of the woods, but I've made enough progress that I don't have to have medication. Becoming a label nazi made me realize how much HEALTHIER it is and actually easier it is to eat fresh fruits and veggies and limit packaged food. If there's no package then it's probably ok for you!

I hope your remedies work for you. I have been thinking about you! If you just want to try out yoga, you may want to check out the fit tv channel. There is a show on there called Namaste that I really like.
