Hot for Huaraches?

The nemesis of my fashion past is back. Upon opening an email from Bloomingdale's I found these little buggers staring back at me under the title "We're HOT for Haute Huaraches!"

You may be wondering, why are these biblical looking sandals your former nemesis? Well flash back to circa 1988 or so. The jelly craze was over. Enter huaraches. I was blessed (or cursed if you are on a budget) with very narrow feet, especially heels. Apparently as soon as I was born mom noticed my thin heels and realized the problem at hand (read: a lifetime of expensive shoes). Well all the other side pony tail, oversized t-shirt (t-tied of course) with leggings, and several pairs of colored socks (rolled) adolescents started rocking the huarache sandals. I wanted to fit the fashion of the moment bill, so off to Roses (or K-Mart, somewhere equally as classy) we went to find my coveted sandals.

One teeny tiny problem arose. Every single pair of shoes was too wide and flopped right off my foot. We managed to secure a pair with an ankle strap (so not cool in my mind) that stayed on my foot. I was instructed, "You can have these shoes if you PROMISE to only wear them with the strap." Of course, I obliged.

Flash forward a day or so in the honeymoon period of my faux leather strappy sandals. Mom & Dad were at work and I was home with my housekeeper. I instantly removed the straps (duh, they weren't cool and naturally being an only child at the time I needed to look cool, solo, in the backyard.) Our backyard just happened to be 2 tiered with brick steps connecting the 2 areas. I was sprinting up the steps for my lunchtime mac & cheese and BAM! I tripped right out of my shoes. On the brick steps. Cracking my head open. (literally.)

After a frantic phone call, a speeding red Volvo wagon took me to the doctor who stitched me up. Needless to say my huarache glory days were short lived as they ended up in the give away box ASAP.

Good thing the trend is back and I can relive my glory days with these little gems (complete with ankle straps!)

SIKE!

Yikes, I didn't like them then and I don't like them now. Now jellies I got down in!

Jellies were WAY better! I had a white pair of those leather ones and while I liked them, I remember that they weren't very comfortable. Mine were most likely from Payless, which would explain why they were uncomfortable.

I will not be reviving this trend either.

Wow...I had pair of those years ago! Can't remember if they were comfortable or not? So long ago, HA! HA!

I know the high ankle version is popular but personally I am not a fan.

It's amazing what comes back in fashion! Let's hope those gel sandals don't return! I'll stick to my Stephen Bonnano/Jack Rogers sandals, ha! ha!

With you on the narrow feet thing...I'm a 5.5 or 6 and shoes just don't come in narrow that small and most that due are not super trendy...Love the story!

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry! I understand the need to be fashionable alone in the backyard though. You gotta have priorities!

(I have the opposite problem- I have the widest (read fattest) feet. I can't wear any dress shoes. Seriously.)

Sorry to hear that you split your head open; that must have been a terrible ordeal. I'm glad there's a new style out there which should hold your narrow foot in much better.

Yeah, I'd stick with jellies. I never liked huaraches (and what a name!) and I suspect I never will.

Love gladiator sandals, I think they are super cute. I just dont know if I can pull of the trend. Jimmy Choo had these amazing ones with heels, but I think that flats are the way to go!! Tis the season for shopping!! Love reading your blog, try and stop by mine! xoxo
