Calling all Creatives!

During my little break from the working world I've had lots of time to think. Amazing how pounding the pavement with your pup can clear your head. I think I'm going to try and start my own design business. Who could be a better boss than yourself, right?

I have a concept that I believe is "untapped" in this area. I am a nationally certified Interior Designer (and a professional member of ASID) that wants to make great design affordable to anyone who values a beautiful living space. I don't want to charge $200/hour and limit my client base to the upper crust. It takes creativity, thought, and a little sweat equity, but you can have a beautiful home without spending the big bucks. By allowing me to help you choose the perfect paint color, or suggest the right throw pillow for your sofa, your home can truly be your haven!

So that's where I need you. I'm working on my business and fee structure but I need help with a name! I think I want a "basic" umbrella of a name, that I can change tag lines below for different target markets. Think recessionista glamor for your home.

So please, my dear readers, rack your brains for the perfect name for my business. I'll give you a few details that might help...

-I do not want my firm to be Lastname Designs, or Lastname and Assoc. Too blah for me.
-We all love Monograms...my initials are K (first) H (middle) M (last)
-The Bird is my nickname...so something with Nest could be interesting?

I'll have a special little treat for the winner!

What an awesome idea!

You could do something along the lines of "feathering your nest" to tie in the with bird theme. It has the potential to be very Country Living circa 1984, but I'm sure you could turn it into some cool ideas.

Eeeeee! So exciting :) I like Feathering the Nest...

We obviously need to catch up soon!

I just asked my kiddos. Here are their ideas:
- The Bird's House
- Tweet Designs
- Hire Me, Or I'll Give You the Bird...

Then they decided to come up with ideas for commercial slogans for you.

I was totally thinking "Feathered Nest" before I read any of the comments. You could always add "Designs" or something to the end of it to make sure people know WHAT your company does.

How about Feather Your Nest Designs?
I was reading this on google reader and thought feather your nest, then I clicked on the actual post and it seems that a couple of people have the feather idea in mind. Great minds think alike!

How about something like "Best Nest Designs"? What is your decorating style? Or "Keeping Homes Modern" to use the monogram?

That sounds so exciting! Do you have a favorite bird? You could do something like your favorite bird's name followed by Nest Designs

I'm so bad at this. What about doing a really pretty monogram of KM (middle initial too, if you like). And the using the word "Renesting" underneath it? KM Renesting. That way it's kind of about redoing what you have - more applicable to people who wouldn't necc. have the money to revamp their ENTIRE home? PS.. I've had a glass of wine & possibly this makes no sense, ha!

I'm thinking. How would you describe your ideal design style in one word?

I love "hire me or I'll give you the bird". So funny.
Do you want something in the name that reflects the economics though?
Like something "on a budget"? Not very creative I know. I've just had a "bikini martini" so forgive me!

What a fun idea! It will be exciting to work with people on their homes.

Enjoy your week!

Hi there, I am prof. ASID, too. I have worked for two firms in the last few years that used initials. IHDG for Ironhorse Design Group and JDDG for J... D.... Design Group. Kelly Wearstler does the same thing calling her firm KWID. That all may sound too architectural firm-ish for you.

What about "The Feathered Nest"? I always wanted to have a shop called "The Scarlet Plume" or "The Scarlet Feather". Don't know why, just love those names. Another one I love is "Cabbages and Kings" which is a line from some kids' book I think, but it does sort of have a high/low connotation to it which could work for your firm. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. I have a firm (though I don't do too much design work right now) and went with the completely boring--"my name iterior design". Best of Luck!!

I just saw "feather your nest" on Etsy. I think that's cute, or The Feathered Nest, which already is the name of a shop in WA http://featherednestinteriors.com/pages/home.php
They don't do interior design so you could still use the name for that purpose.

Everyone seems to have some great ideas! This is so exciting! I love your idea, because it doesn't limit you to only doinf recessionista design (love that btw). You can offer levels of service. Can you tell I'm in the "wedding planning" mindset right now? But you know how you purchase a Photography Package and different coverage has different cost? You can do that with your services!

Keep us posted please! Best of luck!

Let me know if you need any business start up help... just did it myself this past year!

I'm completely uncreative with name suggestions, but I LOVE the idea for your company. I live in Raleigh, and often think of how great it would be to have a few hours of someone's time to help me decide on fabric for a couch and where to purchase it or how I can best use some of the furniture I currently have to set up a guest bedroom...my mother-in-law's interior designer would do this for me, but of course along with a ridiculously HUGE bill. I could also use the design services at a place like National Art Interiors (they do by the hour, or something along those lines I believe), but then I would feel slightly pressured to purchase from them as well. I would definitely use you!!! Best of luck and look forward to hearing how things go!

That is exciting that you're starting your own business!

I liked the "Best Nest" or "Best Nest Design" name from the one of the previous comments. It's simple, but still classy and fun.

P.S If I lived near you, I would definitely hire you! I could use some decorating help.

Feather Your Nest is a name of home improvement sewing patterns from Amy Butler who makes some very simple/mod clothing and home decor patterns as well as fabrics! I am so proud of you for stepping out on a limb for this one. Count me in as a client.
